Chennai Activities

Chennai has a diversified economic base anchored by the automobile, IT, medical tourism, hardware manufacturing and financial services. Other important industries include petrochemicals, textiles and apparels.

IT-BPO and electronics manufacturing have emerged as major drivers of the city's economic growth. Chennai has been rated as the most attractive Indian city for global services. The city is now the second largest exporter of IT and BPO services in the country after Bangalore. A number of SEZs have also emerged in and around Chennai.

NASSCOM Activities:

  • Member Connect:
    • CEO Meetings: Regular meetings are planned with CEOs to create networking opportunities, address common issues and engage in various related activities. In addition, there are multiple focus groups that meet as part of different platforms:
    • Best Practices Sessions: Here, meetings are organised between NASSCOM members and functional heads of Infrastructure, HR, and Admin to understand Best Practices, discuss areas of common concern, and gain insights on market trends.
    • Events: NASSCOM organises, workshops, seminars and speakers club events where broader level issues are discussed. The focus of such sessions is usually on technology, business, regulatory mechanisms, immigrations and visa rules and talent development.
    • Inward Delegations: Foreign companies are invited to visit for business partnerships. NASSCOM organises meetings between its member companies and these foreign delegations.
    • Chennai is the host city for the annual NASSCOM HR Summit and the EmergeOut Conclave.
  • Policy Advocacy
    • NASSCOM works in close partnership with different universities, ICT Academy, State Government to organise job fairs, industry-academia interactions and faculty development initiatives.
  • Development of Tier II cities:
    • NASSCOM has formed a working group to help Tier II cities emerge as preferred destinations for the IT-BPO industry. Various programmes and road shows are being conducted to promote Tier II cities/towns across the country. EMPOWER IT, anevent hosted by NASSCOM in partnership with the government, promotes Tier II cities and towns as IT-BPO hubs. The event is a platform for the industry, government and academia in the region to congregate, discuss issues, share best practices and build strategies for the IT-BPO business.
    • Rural BPO: NASSCOM is working with the government to promote the growth of the BPO industry in Tier II and III locations.
  • Talent Development
    • NASSCOM works in close partnership with different universities, ICT Academy, State Government to organise job fairs, industry-academia interactions and faculty development initiatives.
  • Security Initiatives:
    • NASSCOM has been playing a very proactive role in ensuring that the Indian Information Security environment benchmarks with the best across the globe. Cyber Safety Week, a programme rolled out in partnership with the Police Department, helps spread the message of cyber safety and IT security across all user communities.
  • Regional Forums:

  • Global In-house Centres: These are focus groups that add value to the GIC industry, and to areas such as Governance and talent development.
  • Quality: As part of this initiative, meetings are hosted on emerging trends in quality and operational excellence.
  • EMERGE–Product group: A monthly session, Friday’s 2.0, discusses topics related to marketing, funding and other teething troubles faced by SMEs. Mentorship programmes are conducted, and one-on-one guidance is provided to the smaller players.
  • Engineering Forum: Regular meetings of the group are held at Chennai to discuss industry issues and opportunities.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Workshops are organised to build the business case for gender inclusion, sharing best practices, benchmarking and networking.
